figurative |ˈfigyərətiv|adjective1 departing from a literal use of words; metaphorical : gold, in the figurative language of the people, was “the tears wept by the sun.”2 (of an artist or work of art) representing forms that are recognizably derived from life.
I have been working on a group of pieces for a figurative show at Bennett Galleries in Knoxville, Tennessee. I had to change hats, or more accurately re-route some of my thinking, pry it from the ruts and well worn tracks. I used to do a lot of figural work. Back in the "old days" I did windows full of pieces at the American Folk Art Museum or the Whitney Museum store in NYC or Sweet Nellie. Hauling a load of work and traipsing armfuls across to instal in a large window at Rockefeller plaza. The wonder of a spectacle to those locals and to the wide eyed wonder of me looking back out. I did liberty statues for the gala re-opening fete of the great copper lady, mother of all figures that stands out on the island greeting waves of immigrants and visitors. Over the years I periodically re-visit figures and the act of thinking about them. I look at them and they look at me, they are mirrors and looking glasses, peering in and back out. I guess that is what they do...what they are for.....
"wait until you see the whites of their eyes"
"I traded my eyes for looking glass"
balance seeker...not your usual barbie
rising to her level
tool dip and thoughts without end....
dreams cut/broken and sown like seeds back into the furrow of your life
OK, SO MAYBE "FRESH FACED" DOES NOT ADEQUATELY ACCOUNT FOR ALL THAT WAS DONE HERE. BUT IN ANY CASE THIS PROJECT IS WELL READY FOR ITS NEXT INCARNATION. IT HAS BEEN A PLEASURE ALL AROUND. COMING TOGETHER OF CLIENT, DESIGNER, AND BUILDER AND CRAFTSMEN. THANKS TO ALL...
