TURNING UP THE DESERT HEAT

JUST FINISHED INSTALLING A PROJECT DOWN IN THE CALIFORNIA DESERT.  THE VIEWS OUT ARE SURREAL, INSIDE CALLED OUT FOR PURE STRONG FORMS AND WARM TEXTURES.  THERE IS STILL WORK TO BE DONE AND SOME LAST FINISHES ARE WEAVING THEIR WAY IN BUT THE HOUSE IS COMING HOME!

THE LARGE DOORS FLANKING THE FIREPLACE ARE SCRUBBED THROUGH TO REVEAL LAYERS OF COLOR BENEATH.  THE HINGES ARE CARVED POSTS THAT ARE SET AT THE TOP AND BASE.  THE "GRAB" IS A SLIT/CRAVASSE AT THE MEETING OF THE DOOR PAIRS. AT THE BASE ARE WAXED STEEL LINED WOOD BINS.

SAVE THE DATE!

THE ANNUAL KITCHENS IN THE VINEYARDS HOME TOUR IS JUST AROUND THE BEND. 26 APRIL 2014

VERY HAPPY TO SEE ONE OF THE FIVE HOMES IS A RECENTLY COMPLETED PROJECT THAT I DESIGNED.  TO ME IT STANDS AS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF WHAT CAN HAPPEN WHEN OWNER/CLIENT AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNER AND A TALENTED BUILDER AND TEAM OF CREATIVES COME TOGETHER.

COME SEE!

NESTING INSTINCTS

Was speaking to a friend and client the other day on how to approach her new house project.

What were her goals/what did she "want it to be".....seemed timely; coming at the end of one and the the beginning of the next year.  I am not sure why I/We get hung up in marking the years with beginnings/ends, but I do.  Maybe it is an opportunity to start fresh and renewed, a reset, a chance to raise your stewing epiphanies and set them into motion.  Scrape new tracks or push the cart back into ones that were doing the job but somehow fell away from you. Part of our discussion (maybe what struck me most deeply) was the concept of what to design and also by design what "not to do" .....leaving/preserving resources and space for a "well lived life".  Wanting spaces and environments that work and inspire (and are just plain COOL) and also leave enough quid in your purse to travel/experience/LIVE.

The search for BALANCE will not be solved permanently any time soon.  Part of the nature of that beast is that it needs maintenance and prodding and constant FEEDING.  Like its brother beast of CREATIVITY with much the same needs.....pushing, pruning, feeding, piquing and testing and then more FEEDING.
